The small space transformation
When it came to designing their own flat, Emma and Ross Perkin of Emil Eve Architects had to do some clever space planning. To create a wardrobe in the adjacent bedroom and a laundry cupboard in the hallway, they needed to make the already small bathroom even tinier.

In fact, the new room feels more spacious thanks to a bright white colour scheme and a simple, streamlined design. They also chose the same hexagonal floor tiles as were used in the hallway, which gives the two rooms a connected, harmonious look.

The efficient transformation
It wasn’t just the pink suite that was replaced in this bathroom – the whole room was reworked to make it more practical for the two teenage boys who would be using it.

Architect Angus Eitel of fiftypointeight Architecture + Interiors chose an L-shaped bath to create a larger space for showering. He also built out the back wall to hide the cistern and covered it with a robust Caesarstone top.

The room isn’t overlooked, so to bring in extra light and to make more of the beautiful view, Angus also replaced the rippled glazing with a clear, black-framed window.

The calm, creative transformation
There were a few things making this bathroom feel cramped before its owner, Michelle Johnson of Michelle Shakallis Interiors, revamped it. Although there wasn’t a bath, a huge shower and a large built-in unit that housed the loo and basin were overwhelming the space.

The cumbersome shower and unit were both removed and Michelle brought in an old cast-iron bath from another room in the house and painted it dark grey.

The slate flooring and simple white tiles are complemented by a floral mural, made splashproof with a coat of decorator’s varnish.

Michelle also made use of an L-shaped corner to fit in a shower cubicle.

“I sold the old shower tray and unit and the old basin online,” she says. “This meant they didn’t go into landfill and the proceeds paid for the wall tiles.”

Slightly Quirky Ltd

The period transformation
The whole of this Georgian townhouse was renovated with a beautiful mix of old and new. The previous bathroom didn’t have much period character, so Caroline Nicholls and Deborah Moor of Slightly Quirky set about reinstating some personality.

The new room is a modern take on period style, with traditional fixtures and fittings. The subtle scheme is set off with geometric floor tiles that have a vintage look with a contemporary twist.

Interior Therapy

The small change, big impact transformation
“It was a case of minimum change for maximum effect,” says Vickie Nickolls of Interior Therapy about this bathroom revamp. The fixtures and fittings were in good condition, but the scheme needed an update.

Vickie kept as much of the existing bathroom as she could, including the roll-top bath.

She freshened up the tub with some mid-grey paint, toned down the purple scheme with pale grey walls and white metro tiles, and replaced the taps.

“We then put down patterned cement floor tiles,” Vickie says. “They were the most expensive thing in the room, but because it’s a small area, we wanted it to have impact.”

Studio Wolter Navarro

The sleek, modern transformation
The mint green tub in this bathroom was a dominant feature, as was the patterned window glass.

Almudena Navarro of Studio Wolter Navarro had some ideas for how to turn it into a functional but chic room to match the rest of the house.

Almudena replaced the glazing with plain frosted glass and chose modern sanitaryware and fittings. The geometric tiles were slightly more expensive than other options, but they were key to the design of the room.

To ensure there was bathing space for the kids, as well as a comfortable shower for the adults, Almudena chose a roomy, square bath.

Pataross Projects

The extra storage transformation
Sarah Rossiter and Ed Patey of Pataross Projects originally planned to combine the loo and bathing space of this flat into one room, but restrictions meant they had to leave them as two separate areas.

However, that didn’t stop them turning the beige bathroom into a modern, clean-lined space with plenty of storage.

The monochrome scheme was brought to life with bold, patterned flooring.

A wall-hung vanity unit has deep drawers to stow away clutter, and a built-out shower wall created an adjacent niche above the basin with an extra shelf for storage.
